Tahong Bundok at Cordillera Coffee

Cordillera Coffee presents Baguio's seasoned artists in a group exhibit opening on the 20th of May at 6PM.

Tahong Bundok started in 1980 with 12 members. They derived the name from 'tinunong' tahong and it sounds 'Taong Bundok' which refers to d artists up in the highlands. The group has become as an inspiration to other artists who followed in forming other groups. Together, these artists continue to promote the best of Cordillera culture through their art.

The group, composed of an art professor, architect, engineer, writer, teacher, photographer, and commercial artist, create works of art as diverse as they are.

Coffee AID (Assistance for Indigenous Development) is an NGO that advocates fair trade, empowerment for indigenous peoples, and love for our own. We buy the coffee from indigenous backyard growers from the Cordillera at above-market prices. This is because we believe that they deserve the right price for their quality organically-grown coffee. Through this advocacy, we aim to eliminate the 'middleman' practice where coffee is bought from them at such a low price then sold at high margins to end-consumers. Our native coffee growers care for the coffee they produce; coffee has been their way of life. Exploitation has been their pain and we hope to completely reverse this by helping give what is due them.

Aside from volunteer opportunities, it also offers a program for private individuals to advance-buy coffee thus helping the native farmers get regular income.

On December, the peak of coffee harvest, we started a pilot volunteer program in the Coffee AID farms. We helped in picking the coffee cherries and spent time with the farmers and their children. Summer is the best time for planting new coffee trees, and in our commitment to give what we could, we are enjoining volunteers (yes, you! :D) to be part of the wonderful story of coffee! This is an exciting opportunity to give of ourselves - to plant not just seedlings of coffee trees, but more so to plant hope in the lives of the local coffee farmers.

Aside from tree-planting, we shall also hold various activities for the children, teens and youth in the community. If you are not allowed to do strenuous activities (health conditions, etc) but still want to take part in this unique experience, we still have something for you. You can teach or hold workshops or do story-telling sessions for the youth.

Accommodation is free at the Coffee AID Center in the mountains of Atok, Benguet, and we'd all chip-in for food (fresh veggies, red rice, fresh fruits, weeee!). The Center has a kitchen and hot shower, and for more details, kindly check the attached file. And since May 1st is only a few nights away, we hope you would be available for a pre-trip meeting on Monday, 28th of April.

Ako showcases the works of the second year students of the University of the Philippines Baguio Fine Arts program in their Painting II class this semester.

They learned to work with oil paint using different techniques such as glazing - the traditional, indirect method of painting employed by the old masters; scumbling - a method that permits previous
layers of color to show through opaque second layers of color; and alla prima the one-layer, direct method of painting.

Photo Exhibit gives tribute to upland farmers

By the time that the friendly barista of Cordillera Coffee hands over your order of freshly brewed coffee, you have just experienced a hundred pages of rich coffee history.

The Philippines, being a coffee-drinking nation, is one of those countries which undergo the full process of coffee drinking - from its arduous production to its satisfactory consumption. Cordillera Coffee being dedicated on this cause, will hold a photo exhibit featuring the faces responsible for that rich and intense cup of coffee- the coffee farmers themselves. The exhibit is entitled, “Bin-i: Stories Behind Coffee”.

Coffee AID (Assistance for Indigenous Development), founded by Cordillera Coffee Company, is a non-profit organization that helps our coffee farmers in the interesting and intricate culture of coffee harvesting. Cordillera Coffee boasts of coffee beans directly harvested from the mountains of Cordillera. They believe that it is time to give something in return to those farmers who meticulously harvest coffee beans for us to enjoy in every cup.

Bin-i will showcase the works of Bicol-native photographers, Dennis Rito and Buck Pago. The exhibit will commence on December 16, 2007 at the Cordillera Coffee shop in SM Baguio at 5.30 p.m. Bin-i will be opened by Presidential Assistant for Cordillera Tomas Kilip, and Cordilleraa-based documentary-photographer Tommy Hafalla.
The exhibit will highlight the people responsible for the best coffee in the Philippines, the coffee farmers, through the lens and artistic eyes of our very own celebrated photographers. Rito’s photographs are known for their candid quality while Pago’s (better known as the “nomadic” Buck) style borders more on political and human-nature themes. Both of the photographers are frequent participants in group exhibitions, national and international photo conferences with several commissioned works to boot. Rito is currently working on a photo essay and his previous works could be viewed at http://dsrito.multiply.com and Buck is incessantly working on his independent take on investigative photojournalism everywhere he goes. The said event, among other socio-civic affairs conducted by Cordillera Coffee, aims to bring awareness to coffee-drinkers as to how coffee comes a stirringly long way before reaching our cups.

Bin-i: Stories Behind Coffee is also sponsored by Gallery 7 Digital Studio in partnership with Cordillera Coffee. It will run until January 18, 2008.

Celebrate World Poetry Day at Cordillera Coffee - Baguio

Sample the best of Philippine coffee at this year's coffee festival aptly dubbed, Coffee Connects You. There are simultaneous celebrations at Glorietta 4 lobby, Kape Isla store in Serendra, and the restaurants along Bonifacio High Street, from 12-28 October.

Cordillera Coffee stands to promote the finest mountain coffee in the country. Swing by and support local coffee companies! There's free-flowing coffee for everyone, but please buy the beans and support local coffee growers.

Habi Hulma at Hunyango

Cordillera Coffee presents Habi, Hulma at Hunyango - a group exhibition featuring works by First Year Fine Arts students of the University of the Phippines Baguio.

These are their last three plates where they experienced working with sawdust, plaster of paris and fabric. Under the tutelage of Katti Sta. Ana in their Materials Course, they were introduced to the properties and characteristics, possibilites and limitations of basic and alternative art materials for the production of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional artworks.
Opening ceremonies with invited guest of honour Bencab, will be held on Saturday, the 6th of October 7:00 p.m. at Cordillera Coffee in SM City Baguio.

Exhibit runs until 23rd of November.

BAGuio: A Celebration
